A victory over animal cruelty: Rescuing the Dancing Bears of India. (Link leads to a TED talk)

http://bit.ly/8AaUsV

Traditionally, the Kalandar community of India has survived by capturing sloth bear cubs and training them to "dance" through extreme cruelty. Kartick Satyanarayan has been able to put an end to this centuries-old practice, and in so doing discovered a lesson of wider significance: make the practitioners part of the solution.

What a tough time to be in the military. Tell our troops you're thinking of them. Say thanks!

A special shout out to the poker community: If yours is one of the recognizable faces of the game, here's a great way to promote the game, and to show your gratitude by giving something back to our poker-playing troops.

First, he invented Twitter. Now his latest...

Freakin' brilliant. This will be ubiquitous someday.

http://www.wired.com/epicenter/2009/12/twitter-co-founder-launches-square-like-smartphone-paypal-for-credit-cards/

Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey announced his new company on Tuesday in appropriate fashion: with atweet on the network he created in 2006. His new company, Square, allows merchants and individuals accept secure payment from credit (and other) cards using a mobile phone.
“The basic idea behind Square is that everyone has this little plastic device in their pocket today, which is a payment card, credit card, debit card or pre-paid card, and they’re using them everywhere, they’re using them to buy anything,” explained Dorsey in a TechCrunch video demonstration. “We found that very interesting, and we wanted to turn on the other side of that — we wanted to allow people to very easily and quickly, within 10 seconds, be able to accept these plastic devices as payment.”

United Breaks Guitars

A musician named Dave Carroll recently had difficulty with United
Airlines.  United apparently damaged his treasured Taylor guitar ($3500)
during a flight.  Dave spent over 9 months trying to get United to pay for
damages caused by baggage handlers to his custom Taylor guitar.  During his
final exchange with the United Customer Relations Manager, he stated that he
was left with no choice other than to create a music video for youtube
exposing their lack of cooperation.  The Manager responded : "Good luck with that one, pal".

So he posted a retaliatory video on youtube.  The video has since
received over 5.5 million hits.  United Airlines contacted the musician and
attempted settlement in exchange for pulling the video. Naturally his
response was: "Good luck with that one, pal".

Here's a link to Carroll's video(s): The first song, in particular, is very well done, I think.

Taylor Guitars sent the musician 2 new custom guitars in
appreciation for the product recognition from the video that has lead to a
sharp increase in orders. They also made a video response, which you can see here:

Mmmm... In-Vitro Meat

http://hplusmagazine.com/articles/bio/eight-ways-vitro-meat-will-change-our-lives

In-Vitro Meat will be 100% muscle. It will eliminate the artery-clogging saturated fat that kills us. Instead, heart-healthy Omega-3 (salmon oil) will be added. IVM will also contain no hormones, salmonella, e. coli, campylobacter, mercury, dioxin, or antibiotics that infect primitive meat. I've noted above that IVM will reduce influenza, brucellosis, TB, and Mad Cow Disease. Starvation and kwashiokor (protein deficiency) will be conquered when compact IVM kits are delivered to famine-plagued nations. The globe's water crises will be partially alleviated, due to our inheritance of the 8% of the H2O supply that was previously gulped down by livestock and their food crops.
