On my way to work, I pass by AMD, a Silicon Valley stalwart. They installed an array of solar panels over an entire parking lot sometime last year. It's win-win: people can park beneath the panels, shading their cars from the sun AND the costs are being recovered by lowering AMD's energy bill every time the sun shines. In hot parts of the world, this is genius in action. Every hotel in Vegas should install them. Then, when you drag your broke ass to the car, it would be 20 degrees cooler.
I ran across a variation on the idea that takes it one step further. A school in a poor area of Kenya has a project underway that is building a much-needed basketball court/meeting area beneath a roof that does solar PLUS collects rainwater and purifies it.
Drinking water in a place that needs it, and lights at night. Brilliant.
